Guindalera (also known as the Guindalera neighborhood) is a neighborhood in Madrid belonging to the Salamanca district. It is located near Ventas del Espíritu Santo and is bounded by Avenida de América and the streets of Francisco Silvela, Alcalá, and the M-30.
It began to be populated in the mid-19th century as a satellite neighborhood of the expansion of the Castro Plan, with horticultural settlements that took advantage of the “canalillo” (the surplus channel of the Canal de Isabel II). Later, it grew with the creation of the so-called Madrid Moderno and the Ciudad Lineal by Arturo Soria. Located on the outskirts of its perimeter are the Breogán Park, next to the M-30, and the Eva Duarte Park in Manuel Becerra. The etymology of the neighborhood may come from a popular cherry orchard irrigated by the Abroñigal stream that passed nearby. The neighborhood had one of the first tram lines in Madrid.
The closest stations are Nuevos Ministerios (C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, C-7, C-8, and C-10, in the Chamartín district) and Méndez Álvaro (C-1, C-5, C-7, and C-10, in the Arganzuela district), which can be reached by metro line 6, and Recoletos (C-1, C-2, C-7, C-8, and C-10, in the Recoletos neighborhood), which can be reached by metro line 4.
The neighborhood is served by metro lines 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9.
– Line 2 serves the southern part of the neighborhood with the Manuel Becerra and Ventas stations.
– Line 4 serves the Francisco Silvela axis with stops at Diego de León and Avenida de América.
– Line 5 crosses the neighborhood to the south, with stops at Diego de León and Ventas.
– Line 6 runs parallel to line 4, also passing through Avenida de América and Diego de León, and stopping separately at Manuel Becerra.
– Line 7 serves the northern and eastern parts of the neighborhood with the Avenida de América, Cartagena, and Parque de las Avenidas stations.
– Line 9 serves only the northwestern end of the neighborhood with the Avenida de América station.
